At the Eikefet quarry outside Bergen, Norway, Romarheim Entreprenør handles large volumes of gneiss granite every year. This hard and abrasive rock is known for causing significant wear, making the choice of tooth system a key factor for both productivity and profitability.

When the company decided to evaluate an alternative to its existing tooth system, it chose to test C-REX from Combi Wear Parts. The results exceeded expectations.

The challenge

In quarry operations where large volumes of hard rock are handled every day, wear part performance has a direct impact on both productivity and operating costs.

Romarheim was looking for a solution that could:

  • Reduce the cost per produced tonne
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Increase productivity
  • Simplify maintenance
  • Deliver long service life in demanding applications

The solution

When searching for an alternative to its existing tooth system, Romarheim selected C-REX. Together with Entrack AS, the Norwegian distributor of Combi Wear Parts, Romarheim equipped one of its production buckets – a 6 m³ bucket mounted on a Cat 395 excavator – with the system to evaluate its performance in daily operation.

The test was carried out under normal production conditions at the Eikefet quarry, where more than one million tonnes of gneiss granite are handled every year.

The results

After more than 1,000 operating hours, Romarheim reported several significant improvements.

The company estimates that the cost of replaceable wear parts has been reduced by nearly €0.13 per produced tonne compared to its previous solution. In addition, the mechanical lip shrouds from Combi Wear Parts mounted on the bucket have still not required replacement after more than 1,000 operating hours, further reducing the cost per produced tonne. Improved penetration has also contributed to lower fuel consumption, with Romarheim reporting a reduction of at least 10 percent.

Increased productivity and easier maintenance

Machine operators have also experienced improved productivity, noting that the bucket penetrates the material more efficiently, making it easier to fill the bucket and maintain a high production rate. In addition to the financial benefits, the company highlights the ease of tooth replacement and the long service life as important advantages in day-to-day operations.

From trial to standard solution

The positive results quickly led Romarheim to expand its use of C-REX. Following the initial test installation, the company converted five additional buckets and invested in a brand-new bucket equipped with the system. For Romarheim, the decision was straightforward – when the results in the field exceeded expectations, C-REX became a natural choice for future operations.
